What flexible adhesive LED film is
Flexible adhesive LED film is an ultra-thin screen applied directly to glass or to a curved surface, like a film. During the day the shop window stays a shop window, with light coming in and the view of the interior; when needed, the same surface lights up with content that seems to float in the air.
It answers a problem anyone managing a space knows well: wanting to communicate on a surface that cannot be touched. A heritage glass front, a finished lobby, a load-bearing column, a room where drilling or giving up depth is not an option. With film, the surface stays as it is and becomes a communication channel.
How it works, in brief
The LEDs are mounted on a flexible, transparent backing, without the rigid structure a traditional LED wall needs. This is why the film is light, only a few millimetres thick, follows surfaces curved in one direction and is installed without structural work. Power supply, cables and controller still exist and have to be concealed or built into the design: that is part of the project, not a detail.
There is one trade-off to know: the more transparent the surface stays, the less dense the grid of LEDs. Film performs best with content designed to be read from a few metres away, with clean graphics and essential text, not with photographs to be looked at up close. Brightness, transparency and thickness vary from model to model and are read on the datasheet: our job is to choose the one that suits the space, not the best-selling one.
Where it adds value
Shop windows and glazing
The store speaks to the street without closing itself off. The window changes its message with the seasons, the campaigns and the time of day, and keeps showing the products behind the glass. It is the most common case, and the one where the difference between generic content and content designed for that specific glass shows immediately, as in the interactive windows created for Adidas.
Corporate lobbies and atriums
A column wrapped in film becomes the point where people walking in understand where they are: values, projects, news, a personalised welcome for a delegation. Without taking up a metre of floor with a kiosk.
Museums and exhibition spaces
Display cases, glazing and curved surfaces host content without invasive work, a frequent requirement in listed environments. It is a language we often use in projects for museums and culture, where the original object must remain the protagonist and the information flows alongside it.
Trade shows, events and hospitality
Low weight simplifies transport and assembly, and the surface stays discreet when switched off: two qualities that matter in stands that change shape every edition and in spaces designed with close attention to architecture.
Film or transparent LED wall?
They answer different needs. Film is the choice when the surface already exists and is binding: it goes on top, it can be removed with limited work, it needs no structure. A transparent LED wall with a dedicated structure is worth it when the screen is a new architectural element and more definition and easier module-by-module maintenance are needed. The comparison applied to retail is in the article on transparent LED for shop windows.
Curved surfaces and special shapes
Film wraps well around what is curved in one direction only: a cylindrical column, an arched glass front. It does not cover a sphere, because a flat surface cannot conform to a double curvature without cuts: that is geometry, not a limitation of the product. Spheres, cubes, discs and custom volumes belong to a different family, that of LED screens built on a dedicated structure. We design them when the shape itself is the message: a planet to tell a global story, a volume the audience walks around, a column that intercepts people as they pass.
What changes with a tailored project
Film is a medium. The result depends on what we put on it and on how we connect it to the space, and this is where an installation differs from a switched-on screen.
In our projects the content is drawn on the real geometry of the surface, not adapted from a rectangular video: on a column the animation wraps around, on a glass front it moves in relation to people passing by. The surface can respond to people thanks to our IMUV touchless sensors, so a gesture in front of the window changes the content without touching the glass. Light, sound and scent diffusion synchronise with what appears, when the space calls for it. The schedule updates remotely with seasons and campaigns. And the system measures how long people stop, so the installation improves over time instead of ageing.
Every surface has its own constraints: type of glass, sun exposure, curvature, cable routing, viewing distance. This is why we always start from an analysis of the space and the objectives, and build the proposal on that specific case.
Where to start
If you already have a surface in mind, the quickest way to find out whether it is suitable is to send us a photo, indicative dimensions and the distance from which it will be viewed. We will tell you which technologies are compatible, what kind of content works in that position and which on-site checks are needed before defining the project.
Frequently asked questions
Can LED film be applied to any glass?
Not to all of it. The condition of the glass, any existing treatments or films, heat exposure and, on curved surfaces, the radius of curvature all need checking. It is a check we carry out before proposing any solution.
Is it clearly visible during the day?
On professional models yes, with one condition: the content has to be designed for daylight, with dark backgrounds, solid elements and essential text. Highly detailed photographs lose impact in backlit conditions. We check the result on site, in real conditions.
Can it be removed without damage?
Generally yes, and it is one of the reasons it is chosen in listed buildings, rented spaces and temporary setups. Whether it leaves residue depends on the glass and its treatments, so the removal method is agreed in advance.
How much energy does it use?
It depends on the surface, the brightness setting and the content: a mostly dark image draws less than one on a light background. In the project we estimate the average operating consumption, which is what matters on the bill.
What maintenance does it need?
Cleaning of the surface with the products indicated by the manufacturer and a periodic check of power supplies, connections and image uniformity. Lifetime depends on the model and the hours of use: in the project we specify warranty, spare parts and the service plan.
