What a 3D billboard is
A 3D billboard is an LED screen (curved or flat) that plays video content with a three-dimensional forced-perspective effect, visible to the naked eye without glasses. The technology is known as naked-eye 3D or 3D anamorphic display: the illusion of depth is created through video content designed with a specific perspective distortion which, when viewed from the right vantage point, produces the sense of objects breaking out of the screen.
These are not holograms, and no additional device is required. The effect works because the content is purpose-built for the exact geometry of the screen and the viewing angle of the audience.
How naked-eye 3D technology works
The underlying principle is forced perspective, a technique used in architecture for centuries and later adopted by film. Applied to high-resolution LED displays, it works like this:
- Screen geometry: curved screens (typically set at a 90-degree angle) use two perpendicular surfaces to naturally create a virtual "box" out of which 3D objects appear to emerge. Flat screens achieve the same effect through carefully calibrated shadows and perspective distortions.
- Anamorphic content: the video is produced with a distortion that compensates for the shape of the screen. Seen from the intended vantage point, the brain reads the image as three-dimensional. Seen from extreme angles, the distortion becomes apparent.
- High resolution and brightness: pixel density (a fine LED pitch, usually P1.5-P4 for indoor and P4-P8 for outdoor) and high brightness (up to 8,000 nits outdoors) are essential to make the illusion convincing.
Indoor and outdoor 3D billboards: the differences
Indoor
Indoor 3D screens are installed in controlled spaces: corporate lobbies, showroom entrances, shopping centres, hotel receptions and exhibition stands. A fine LED pitch (P1.5-P3) suits close-up viewing, with moderate brightness (800-1,500 nits) and sizes from 2 to 10 metres. The controlled environment makes it possible to fine-tune lighting and viewing angle to maximise the effect.
Outdoor
Outdoor 3D billboards are installations on building facades, the corners of buildings, and dedicated structures in squares and shopping streets. They use a wider LED pitch (P4-P8, for viewing from greater distances), very high brightness (5,000-8,000 nits for visibility in full sunlight) and IP65 protection against the elements. The most iconic installations exploit the corners of buildings to create two-sided curved screens.

Corporate facades and headquarters
The entrance to a company or showroom fitted with a 3D billboard becomes a point of attraction. The 3D content tells the brand story in a memorable way: a product that "steps out" of the screen, a logo that materialises in space, an animation that stops passers-by in their tracks. Frequently asked questions
Does a 3D billboard work from any angle?
The three-dimensional effect is at its best from the intended vantage point (the sweet spot). From extreme side angles the illusion diminishes, but the message remains visible and impactful. Curved 90-degree screens offer a wider optimal viewing angle than flat screens.
Does it require maintenance?
Professional LED displays require minimal maintenance: periodic cleaning, module checks and firmware updates. Their average lifespan is 8 to 10 years with continuous operation. Content can be updated remotely.
Does a 3D billboard use a lot of energy?
Power consumption depends on size and brightness. The latest generation of LED displays is significantly more efficient than previous ones. A medium-sized indoor display draws a few hundred watts on average, depending on brightness and the content played. Outdoor versions running at maximum brightness use more, but the energy cost is marginal compared to the communicative impact.
Can the 3D content be changed?
Yes. The content consists of video files played by a media player connected to the screen. You can program playlists, schedule different content by time slot or campaign, and update the videos remotely. Each new piece of 3D content does, however, require specific production for the geometry of the installed screen.
