What an interactive wall is
An interactive wall is a vertical surface (a wall, a glass panel, a partition) that responds to a visitor's presence, touch or gestures. The projected or displayed content changes in real time according to the interaction: visitors don't simply look at fixed content, they explore it, reshape it and play with it.
The difference from a screen merely hung on a wall is crucial: an interactive wall is designed for interaction. It is built to engage an audience, not just to display information.
The technologies behind an interactive wall
Projection-based interactive wall
A video projector (or a multi-projection system) casts images onto the wall. Infrared sensors or depth cameras track the visitor's position and movements, and the software adapts the content in real time. Benefits: scalability (walls up to 20 metres), contained costs and no wear on the screen. Ideal for museums, galleries and temporary events.
LED interactive wall
High-resolution LED modules cover the wall, while integrated capacitive or infrared sensors detect touch. Benefits: high brightness (it works even in very well-lit spaces), durability and minimal maintenance. Ideal for showrooms, corporate lobbies and retail.
IMUV touchless wall
Vimage's proprietary IMUV technology enables interaction without contact. 3D depth sensors track the position of the body and gestures from a distance, so visitors "touch" the wall without ever touching it. Benefits: hygiene, accessibility (it works for visitors with reduced mobility too) and a real wow factor. Ideal for museums, hospitals and public spaces.
Where an interactive wall is used
Museums and galleries
The interactive wall is one of the most sought-after solutions in the museum sector. It tells stories, presents 3D reconstructions and lets visitors explore content at their own pace. At the Natural History Museum in Venice, touchless interactive walls transformed the entire exhibition journey.
Retail and showrooms
In retail, the interactive wall becomes an immersive catalogue: customers browse products, configure options and visualise different settings. Adidas used interactive walls in its shop windows to turn passers-by into the stars of the campaign.
Trade shows and events
On exhibition stands, the interactive wall acts as a magnet for visitors. Paired with an interactive floor, it creates an immersive experience that stops passers-by in their tracks and turns them into qualified leads.
Offices and corporate spaces
Corporate halls, meeting rooms, B2B showrooms: the interactive wall presents the brand in a memorable way. It can show real-time data, a company timeline or a project portfolio.
Hospitality
Hotel lobbies, spas, restaurants: the interactive wall welcomes guests with personalised content, local information and immersive ambient experiences.
Interactive wall and interactive floor: a winning combination
When an interactive wall and an interactive floor work together, the result is a complete immersive experience. Visitors are surrounded by content that responds to their every movement, in any direction. This approach is especially effective for gamification at trade shows and for immersive museum journeys.
How much an interactive wall costs
The investment depends on three factors: the size of the wall, the technology you choose (projection, LED or touchless IMUV) and the complexity of the content. A projection-based interactive wall for a 6 sqm space starts from a few thousand euros. Full-wall LED displays and multi-wall systems call for a higher investment. Frequently asked questions
Does an interactive wall require structural work?
No, in most cases installation is non-invasive. Projectors are mounted on the ceiling or on brackets, and the sensors are discreet. For LED displays, the modules are fixed to the existing wall. No building works are needed.
Can the content be customised?
Yes, the content is designed bespoke for each client and can be updated remotely. A museum updates its artwork descriptions, a company updates its portfolio, a retailer updates its promotions, all from the management panel.
Does it work in very brightly lit spaces?
LED displays work in any lighting condition. Projection-based solutions require some control over ambient lighting, so in very bright environments a LED display is the preferred choice.
